Pentagon Calls Off Briefing with Hegseth, Joint Chiefs Chairman
(MENAFN) A Pentagon press briefing scheduled for 8 a.m. (1200 GMT) on Tuesday has been abruptly canceled.
“Tomorrow's press briefing has been cancelled,” a notice issued by the Pentagon on Monday stated.
The briefing was set to feature Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, occurring just 12 hours before a hard deadline set by US President Donald Trump. Trump has demanded that Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face targeted strikes on its power plants and bridges.
No reason was provided for the cancellation of the briefing.
On Monday, Trump warned that US forces could "take out" the entire nation of Iran in a single night, adding, “and that night might be tomorrow night."
He further specified that by Tuesday at 8 p.m. EDT (0000 GMT Wednesday), every bridge and power plant in Iran would be "decimated" if an agreement was not reached.
Tensions in the Middle East have surged since the US and Israel launched a joint strike on Iran on Feb. 28, which has killed more than 1,340 people, including the then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Iran has carried out drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US troops. These strikes have caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted global markets and aviation.
