US Lawmaker Intends to Impeach Defense Secretary
(MENAFN) US Representative Yassamin Ansari announced on Monday her intention to put forward articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, citing his conduct in relation to the ongoing US-Israeli conflict involving Iran.
US President Donald “Trump is escalating a devastating, illegal war, threatening massive war crimes and targeting civilian infrastructure in Iran,” the Arizona Democrat stated in a message shared on the US social media company X’s platform, further asserting that “Pete Hegseth is complicit.”
“I’ve called for the 25th Amendment and am introducing Articles of Impeachment against Hegseth,” she continued.
Her statements emerged as scrutiny intensifies over US military operations in Iran, with growing attention on allegations of civilian harm and possible breaches of international law.
According to reports from media, an initial US military probe determined that the United States was responsible for a missile attack on an Iranian elementary school in February, resulting in the deaths of at least 175 individuals, the majority of whom were children.
Trump has additionally faced backlash for signaling a potential expansion of strikes targeting civilian infrastructure, such as power facilities and bridges. Legal analysts have cautioned that these measures may qualify as war crimes under international law.
