Netanyahu Presses Trump to Hold Off on Iran Ceasefire

(MENAFN) Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urged US President Donald Trump to hold off on brokering a ceasefire with Iran, raising alarms over the strategic dangers such a move could entail, U.S. media reported Monday.

The appeal came during a Sunday phone call, in which Netanyahu made clear his deep reservations about any prospective halt to hostilities with Tehran, an Israeli official confirmed to media.

Trump did not yield to the pressure. The US president told Netanyahu that a ceasefire remained within reach — contingent on Tehran meeting Washington's conditions. He reaffirmed that those terms require Iran to hand over all of its enriched uranium and make an ironclad pledge not to resume uranium enrichment, the official said.

On a more public front, Netanyahu used US social media platform X on Monday to confirm the call, crediting Trump for what he called a "heroic rescue operation" of a US aircrew member. Trump, in turn, expressed appreciation for Israel's contribution to the effort.

The Israeli premier further revealed that Trump had saluted Israel as a "steadfast, determined, and firm ally," declaring that the two nations are "continuing to crush Iran's regime of terror."

The private discord over Iran diplomacy surfaces as the wider conflict shows no signs of cooling. US-Israeli military strikes against Iran, launched on Feb. 28, have left at least 1,340 people dead — including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has answered with successive waves of drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states where American forces are stationed.
