Cuban President Hosts US Democrats in Havana

(MENAFN) Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel hosted US Democratic lawmakers in Havana for high-level talks centered on the devastating impact of Washington's energy embargo on the island nation.

Representatives Pramila Jayapal of Washington state and Jonathan Jackson of Illinois conducted a packed five-day diplomatic visit, which concluded Sunday, holding separate meetings with Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez and members of the Cuban parliament.

Taking to X, the US social media platform, Diaz-Canel described the exchanges in pointed terms: "Upon receiving U.S. congressmembers @RepJayapal and @rep_jackson, I denounced the criminal damage caused by the #blockade, particularly the consequences of the energy siege decreed by the current U.S. government and its threats of even more aggressive actions. I reiterated the willingness of our Government to sustain a serious and responsible bilateral dialogue and to find solutions to the existing differences."

In a joint statement, the two lawmakers leveled sharp criticism at the Trump administration, accusing its policies of causing "untold suffering" across Cuba.

"This is cruel collective punishment — effectively an economic bombing of the infrastructure of the country — that has produced permanent damage. It must stop immediately," they said.

The congressional delegation painted a grim picture of conditions on the ground — premature newborns imperiled by power-starved incubators, cancer patients cut off from treatment, children absent from classrooms, widespread water shortages, and a steep decline in food output.

Cuba's energy lifeline has grown increasingly precarious. Following a three-month suspension of oil deliveries prompted by tightened US sanctions, Russian tanker Anatoly Kolodkin recently offloaded roughly 730,000 barrels of crude to the island. Meanwhile, longtime suppliers Venezuela and Mexico have halted their shipments entirely, unwilling to risk exposure to US sanctions or potential intervention.
