Rising Energy Costs Strain Global Agriculture

(MENAFN) Agricultural and food production are facing mounting pressure due to geopolitical instability in the Middle East and the decline in tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Over the past month, escalating energy expenses have driven up prices in essential commodity markets, threatening the global food supply.

The escalation began with the US and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28 and Tehran’s subsequent retaliatory actions. These developments have heightened Middle Eastern tensions, intensifying the strain on worldwide energy, food, and commodity prices, while causing notable disruptions to supply chains.

Security concerns around this critical waterway have triggered another wave of increases in global agricultural prices. Rising costs for energy, fertilizers, and transportation have all contributed to this trend, compounding the challenges faced by producers.

In response, farmers have been adjusting their planting strategies, reshaping crop rotation plans to account for these shifting economic and logistical conditions.

The changes in agriculture are not solely due to supply concerns. The widespread impact of soaring energy and shipping expenses has reverberated across the entire agricultural production chain, influencing decision-making at multiple levels.

Rising costs for nitrogen-based fertilizers may further accelerate a move toward crops like soybeans, which require less fertilizer, at the expense of corn and wheat. Market expectations indicate that corn planting areas in the US could shrink, while soybean cultivation is likely to expand.
