Namibia Refutes to Grant telecommunications Starlink License
(MENAFN) Namibia has refused to grant a telecommunications license to Elon Musk’s Starlink, amid growing resistance to the US satellite internet provider across Africa. The Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) announced on Monday that Starlink’s application for service and spectrum access had been rejected.
CRAN stated that Starlink’s Namibian subsidiary does not meet local ownership requirements, which usually mandate that at least 51% of a telecom company be domestically owned. The regulator said the decision was made in line with licensing regulations and could be reconsidered either on its own initiative or if a petition is filed within 90 days.
Starlink had requested an exemption to operate as a fully foreign-owned entity, but Namibia’s ownership laws posed a legal obstacle to the plan.
