Portugal Announces Plans to Open Embassy in Baku
(MENAFN) Portugal has taken a significant diplomatic step forward, announcing its decision to establish a resident embassy in Baku — a move that signals Lisbon's intent to deepen its formal presence in Azerbaijan.
The announcement emerged Wednesday following a phone call between Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov, during which the two top diplomats exchanged views on bilateral cooperation alongside pressing regional and international security matters, according to the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It was Rangel who formally conveyed Lisbon's decision to open the mission, with Bayramov responding warmly to the initiative — welcoming the upgrade in diplomatic representation as a constructive development in the two countries' relations.
Both ministers underscored the value of structured political consultations and high-level mutual visits as key drivers in advancing the bilateral relationship.
The conversation also turned to the economic dimension of the partnership, with both sides surveying existing avenues for expanded cooperation across a broad spectrum of sectors — including energy, trade, transport, and tourism — pointing to a shared ambition to translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible bilateral gains.
