S. Korea Affirms It Is Not Planning to Develop Nuclear Weapons
(MENAFN) South Korea’s Foreign Minister, Cho Hyun, stated that Seoul has no plans to develop nuclear weapons, emphasizing that the country’s commitment to non-proliferation is a deliberate strategic choice rather than a legal obligation.
Cho addressed concerns that South Korea’s moves to modernize its nuclear fuel cycle and develop nuclear-powered submarines might indicate intentions to acquire nuclear arms, calling such speculation “completely unfounded.”
He noted that nuclear weapons alone do not guarantee security or national well-being, citing North Korea as an example. Cho reiterated that upholding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is both a principled and strategic imperative for South Korea.
The clarification follows a US-South Korea trade agreement in November, which includes $150 billion in South Korean investment in the US shipbuilding sector, with Washington supporting Seoul’s bid to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.
