Trump Links Iran Ceasefire Request to Strait of Hormuz Reopening

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump claimed on Wednesday that Iran’s new leadership had approached Washington seeking a ceasefire, adding that the US would consider such a request only if the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.

"Iran's new regime president, much less radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a ceasefire," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

He specified that Washington would entertain the request only once the strait is "open, free, and clear," while warning that strikes against Iran would continue "into oblivion or, as they say, back to the stone ages" until that condition is met.

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman denied Trump’s claim, stating that Tehran has not requested a ceasefire.

According to reports citing US officials, discussions are reportedly ongoing about a possible ceasefire in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Sources noted that Trump is actively considering the option with advisors both inside and outside his administration, though it remains uncertain whether an agreement could be achieved. It was unclear if the discussions involve direct talks with Iran or are being conducted through intermediaries such as Pakistan.

Iranian officials have previously clarified that communications with the US do not constitute formal negotiations but are limited to message exchanges, either directly or via regional intermediaries.

Trump has repeatedly described Iran’s new leadership as "much more reasonable" than its predecessors. He told media earlier this week that the conflict was "coming to an end" and claimed the US had achieved "total regime change." He also mentioned ongoing contacts with Iranian parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf.
