Israel Says It Killed Hezbollah Commander in Strike on Beirut
(MENAFN) The Israeli military said Wednesday it had killed Hajj Youssef Ismail Hashem, a senior figure in Hezbollah, during an airstrike targeting Beirut the previous day.
According to Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee, Hashem served as a commander within Hezbollah’s "Southern Front," a unit involved in operations along the Lebanon-Israel border. Posting on the US-based social media platform X, Adraee further alleged that Hashem had taken part in clashes with Israeli troops in southern Lebanon and was involved in launching rockets toward Israel.
Hezbollah did not immediately comment on the claim.
The reported strike comes amid escalating hostilities despite a ceasefire that went into effect in November 2024. Since a cross-border assault by Hezbollah on March 2, Israeli forces have intensified both aerial bombardments and ground operations in southern Lebanon.
In parallel, Hezbollah has continued firing rocket barrages into Israeli territory since early March. The group says these attacks are retaliation for ongoing Israeli strikes inside Lebanon, as well as the killing of Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on Feb. 28.
Lebanese officials report that at least 1,268 people have been killed and 3,750 others wounded in Israeli attacks since the escalation began.
