China Denounces US Restrictions on Trade With Venezuela
(MENAFN) Beijing on Wednesday criticized the U.S. decision to issue “general licenses” that block China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and Cuba from engaging in trade with Venezuela, according to reports.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said, “China firmly opposes setting restrictions on China-Venezuela cooperation by issuing so-called general licenses,” highlighting the importance of protecting the interests of the world’s second-largest economy.
Mao added that instead of creating such licenses, the United States should **“lift illicit, unilateral sanctions on Venezuela at once, rather than use so-called general licenses to whitewash its moves” that impede the legitimate economic activities of other countries, according to reports.
The U.S. Treasury clarified that these licenses do not cover the processing or refining of Venezuelan-origin minerals, including gold, and continue to exclude China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba from the transactions, as stated by reports.
The move comes in the aftermath of U.S. military actions in Caracas earlier this year, which led to the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, over charges including drug trafficking and weapons offenses, according to reports.
