Russia Prepares to Offer India Advanced Air Defense Systems

(MENAFN) Russia is reportedly preparing to provide India with additional capabilities to strengthen its strategic air defense network, sources have said. The proposed package may include Pantsir short-range air defense systems, designed to safeguard critical military and strategic locations against large-scale attacks.

The systems would supplement India’s existing air defense setup, which features both Russian-supplied equipment and domestically developed platforms.

“Russia is ready to offer India the supply of Pantsir‑S1M surface‑to‑air missile and gun systems in order to provide effective protection for the country’s existing long‑range S‑400 Triumph systems,” a source close to the discussions told RT. The Pantsir‑S1M is reportedly capable of engaging a wide range of aerial targets, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The Indian military has publicly acknowledged the value of Russian-built S‑400 systems during the May 2025 standoff with Pakistan. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the system’s performance, saying, “Platforms like the S-400 have given unprecedented strength to the country,” during an address to troops following the conflict.

This move follows a recent announcement by Russia’s High Precision Systems holding company, which delivered a batch of Pantsir‑S air defense vehicles to the Russian Defense Ministry after successful trials and formal acceptance. In a March 20 press release, the company described the Pantsir as “one of the key elements protecting Russia’s skies,” noting its proven effectiveness, including intercepting cruise missiles such as Storm Shadow and Flamingo, as well as ATACMS ballistic missiles.
