Iran's Bandar Abbas Port Hit by US-Israeli Strikes
(MENAFN) US-Israeli strikes have struck a major port in Bandar Abbas, a southern Iranian coastal city strategically positioned along the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian media reported Wednesday.
"US and Israeli forces targeted Shahid Haghani Port in Bandar Abbas, which is used for passenger and commercial purposes," semi-official media quoted Ahmad Nafisi, the political, security, and social deputy governor of Hormozgan province, as saying.
Nafisi confirmed that search and rescue operations had been launched, with firefighting crews also deployed to the site. He provided no immediate figures on casualties or the scale of destruction sustained at the port.
The strike marks the latest escalation in a conflict that began on Feb. 28, when US and Israeli forces launched an air campaign against Iran. Since then, more than 1,340 people have been killed, according to Iranian authorities.
Tehran has responded with retaliatory drone and missile strikes against Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations.
