Russian Military Plane Crashes in Crimea, Killing All People on Board
(MENAFN) A Russian military transport aircraft crashed in Crimea on Tuesday evening, killing all 29 people on board, the Defense Ministry confirmed.
The ministry said contact with the plane was lost at approximately 6 PM local time while it was conducting a "routine flight" over the strategically vital Black Sea peninsula. media cited an unnamed source as saying the aircraft went down after striking a mountain.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated there were "no signs of external impact on the aircraft," effectively ruling out the possibility that the plane had been shot down by Ukraine. A news agency separately reported that preliminary findings point to a technical malfunction as the likely cause of the disaster.
The downed aircraft, an An-26, is a Soviet-designed twin-engine turboprop workhorse capable of carrying up to 40 soldiers, and is widely used for paratrooper deployment and battlefield medical evacuation.
The crash comes at a particularly sensitive moment, with Crimea — annexed by Russia in 2014 — remaining a strategically contested flashpoint throughout the ongoing war in Ukraine. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of those killed or the specific nature of the mission the aircraft was conducting at the time of the crash. A formal investigation is expected to be launched as Russian military officials work to establish the precise cause of the tragedy.
