French Opposition Calls on EU to Act Against Israel’s Death Penalty Law
(MENAFN) Mathilde Panot, deputy leader of the far-left France Unbowed (LFI) parliamentary group, on Tuesday called on the European Union to respond to Israel’s approval of a controversial death penalty law targeting Palestinians.
“Yesterday, a law was definitively passed that establishes a racist death penalty against Palestinians,” Panot said during a news briefing at the National Assembly.
She highlighted that an Israeli rights organization has filed a Supreme Court challenge against the law, which mandates executions without possibility of appeal.
“This would mean immediate hanging for at least 300 Palestinian prisoners, while none of Israel’s citizens have been prosecuted for the killing of Palestinian civilians since 2020,” Panot stated.
She further noted that since 2022, at least 1,100 Palestinians have died at the hands of settlers or the Israeli military in the West Bank, and that Israel has not carried out a death sentence since the execution of Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in 1962.
Panot urged France to impose sanctions on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for what she called “extremely serious violations of international law” and encouraged citizens to support a European Citizens’ Initiative aimed at pressuring the European Commission to suspend the EU-Israel association agreement.
According to reports, the Knesset approved the law on Monday evening with 62 votes in favor and 48 against, with Netanyahu voting in support. The legislation permits executions by hanging, conducted by prison guards appointed by the Israeli Prison Service, whose identities remain confidential and who are granted legal immunity.
