Turkish First Lady Urges Action Against Food Waste

(MENAFN) Nearly half of all deaths among children under the age of five are linked to hunger, Turkish First Lady Emine Erdogan warned on Monday, urging global efforts to curb food waste on the fourth anniversary of International Zero Waste Day.

In a video message shared on the social media platform X, Erdogan drew attention to the human and environmental costs of food loss, calling for increased awareness and changes in behavior. She stressed that recovering just a quarter of globally wasted food could be sufficient to eliminate hunger, pointing out that 673 million people currently face hunger while over 2 billion lack access to adequate and balanced nutrition.

This year’s theme for International Zero Waste Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 2022 under Türkiye’s leadership, is focused on "food waste." Erdogan highlighted that one in 12 people worldwide is at risk of chronic hunger and that 2.3 billion tons of food—equivalent to 5.8 trillion meals—is lost or wasted each year. She said: “Every wasted bite carries the rights of those whose lives depend on it.”

“Sadly, nearly half of deaths among children under the age of five worldwide are caused by hunger," she added. "Yet if we could recover just a quarter of the food wasted globally, we could end hunger in the world.”

Erdogan also noted the environmental impact, stating that food loss and waste contribute 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, further stressing climate and ecological pressures. Citing the Food Waste Index Report, she emphasized that 60% of food waste occurs at the household level and that small behavioral changes could make a meaningful difference.
