US, Israel Strike Iraq’s PMF Positions in Babil, Anbar

(MENAFN) US and Israeli forces carried out airstrikes against Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in Babil and Anbar provinces late Tuesday, according to the group.

In a statement, the PMF said three strikes targeted the 45th Brigade near midnight in the Jurf al-Nasr area of Babil province in central Iraq, while an additional strike hit the 31st Brigade in the Karma area of Anbar province in western Iraq.

“These attacks did not result in any significant human losses,” the statement said.

The PMF is a state-sanctioned Iraqi military and security umbrella established in 2014 following a religious edict by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani to combat the ISIS (Daesh) terrorist organization. It was officially integrated into Iraq’s armed forces in 2016.

Recent attacks on PMF positions, which have killed and injured dozens of fighters, occur amid a wider conflict involving the United States and Israel against Iran since February 28.

Washington alleges that certain PMF factions maintain ties to Iran, as Iraqi groups operating under what is called the “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” have claimed responsibility for attacks on US bases in the region.

The confrontation with Iran has resulted in hundreds of deaths, including prominent figures such as former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and top military officials. Tehran has retaliated with missiles and drones targeting Israel and Gulf states hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure.
