UK PM Reaffirms Nation’s Neutral Stance Amid Israel-US War on Iran
(MENAFN) The British prime minister on Monday reiterated that the UK is not being drawn into the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, emphasizing decisions are guided by national interest, according to reports.
“I will always make decisions that are in the national interest. It’s why we aren’t getting dragged into the Middle East conflict, and why we are fighting to protect your living standards," Keir Starmer said on the social media platform X.
Addressing opposition parties over their response to the Iran war, Starmer described his government’s approach as one of “hope and pride.” Last week, he also highlighted a “clear difference” of opinion with US President Donald Trump, noting that pressure to change his stance would not influence him. “My own view is that a lot of what is said and done has been to put pressure on me to change my mind, but I'm not going to do so,” he told Sky News.
Starmer is scheduled to chair an emergency COBRA meeting on Tuesday regarding the Iran conflict and is set to hold a roundtable with energy executives later Monday.
The remarks come amid tensions with the United States, following criticism from the US president over Britain’s initial refusal to allow US military access to British bases for the US-Israel strike on Iran on February 28. The UK later permitted “defensive” use of bases as Iran launched missiles and drones across the Gulf. Starmer has repeatedly stressed that Britain will not participate in the Iran war.
Regional tensions have escalated since the February 28 offensive by Israel and the US, which has resulted in over 1,340 fatalities, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
