Finland Moves to Make Drone Alert Application

(MENAFN) Finland is racing to deploy a dedicated mobile application designed to warn citizens of incoming drone threats, as the Nordic nation grapples with a surge in unmanned aerial activity near its borders, media reported Tuesday, citing the Interior Ministry.

The application is on track for a late 2027 rollout and will run alongside a parallel SMS-based alert system currently under simultaneous development — though officials are careful to note the two platforms serve distinct functions.

However, Jussi Korhonen, director of preparedness at the Interior Ministry's Rescue Department, specified that the two systems have "slightly different purposes."

The text message-based system is designed for broader reach, capable of alerting citizens without smartphones and covering a wide spectrum of emergencies, including hazardous chemical incidents. The mobile application, by contrast, is reserved for more acute national security scenarios.

The mobile app is primarily intended for exceptional situations confirmed by the government or the president, such as armed attacks or threats to Finland, Korhonen added.

Rather than launching a standalone platform, authorities plan to embed the new functionality directly within an existing infrastructure.

The app will be integrated into the existing 112 Suomi.fi application, which already provides hazard alerts.

The announcement comes against a backdrop of growing aerial intrusions. Finland's Defense Ministry recently confirmed that at least two unmanned aerial vehicles were detected over the country's southeastern region. One of the drones was subsequently identified by the Finnish Air Force as Ukrainian in origin before it crashed near Kouvola.

Finnish F/A 18 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept and identify the objects, though pilots held fire to prevent unintended casualties on the ground.

The incidents carry particular strategic weight given Finland's geography. Southeastern Finland shares a lengthy frontier with Russia, which has remained locked in an active armed conflict with Ukraine since February 2022.
