Eight Countries Denounce Israeli Worship Restrictions in Jerusalem
(MENAFN) On Monday, eight countries, including Türkiye, voiced strong opposition to Israeli limitations on religious practices in Jerusalem, cautioning that continued restrictions threaten both religious freedoms and regional stability.
Foreign ministers from Türkiye, Egypt, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates collectively rejected Israel’s ongoing restrictions on worship for Muslims and Christians in the occupied city, including measures preventing Muslim worshippers from reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque.
They reiterated their condemnation of any Israeli efforts to “alter” the legal and historical status of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.
“These continued Israeli measures constitute a flagrant violation of international law, including international humanitarian law, as well as of the existing legal and historical status quo, and represent an infringement on the unrestricted right of access to places of worship,” the joint statement said.
The diplomats emphasized their “absolute rejection of the illegal and restrictive” Israeli policies targeting both Muslims and Christians, citing instances such as preventing Christians from freely visiting the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to conduct religious ceremonies.
