Israeli Rights Group Petitions Court to Halt Death Penalty for Palestinian Prisoners
(MENAFN) The Association for Civil Rights in Israel submitted a petition Monday to the Supreme Court challenging a Knesset law that allows the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners.
The petition names the Knesset, the prime minister, the defense minister, the commander of Israel’s army in the West Bank, the attorney general, the military advocate general, and the prison service.
The group argued that "the death penalty is fundamentally unconstitutional, given the grave and irreparable violation it inflicts on the right to life."
It also said the law "egregiously violates human rights, is incompatible with democratic values, and was enacted with a prohibited motive of revenge and racism."
Citing the law’s immediate implementation and potential human rights violations, the association requested a precautionary order to freeze the law and an urgent hearing to review the petition.
The legislation passed in the Knesset’s second and third readings with 62 votes in favor, 48 against, and one abstention, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voting in support.
