Slovenia Condemns Israeli Death Penalty Law for Palestinians

(MENAFN) Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon criticizes a recently passed Israeli law permitting the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, describing it as discriminatory and cautioning that it could weaken justice and security.

“An Israeli law introducing the death penalty is clearly discrimination against Palestinians,” Fajon said in a post on X. She emphasized that everyone should face accountability for acts of violence and that capital punishment is not a solution. “Security cannot be built on discrimination and justice cannot exist without fairness,” she added.

As stated by reports, Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, approved the legislation in its second and third readings by 62 votes to 48. The law allows Israeli courts to sentence Palestinian prisoners to death, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu voting in favor. The measure has sparked international criticism and is expected to heighten discussions on legal and human rights concerns in the region.
