Ukraine Issues Apology to Finland After Drones Breach Its Airspace
(MENAFN) Ukraine issued a formal apology to Finland on Monday after Ukrainian drones strayed into Finnish airspace, with Kyiv blaming Russian electronic warfare interference for the navigational breach.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi addressed the incident during a press briefing in Kyiv, stating the unmanned aircraft were originally deployed toward Russian territory before deviating off course.
"We can state firmly that Ukrainian drones were in no way directed toward Finland. The most likely cause is disruption by Russian electronic warfare systems," Tykhyi said.
"We have already apologized to the Finnish side for this incident," he stated.
The drones were spotted over Finnish territory on Sunday — one came down north of the city of Kouvola, while a second landed to the east. Finland's Ministry of Defense confirmed that at least one of the aircraft was of Ukrainian origin.
At the presidential level, Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that he had spoken directly with Finnish President Alexander Stubb regarding the border violation, adding that both "see this situation the same way."
The episode underscores the growing risk of conflict spillover into neighboring neutral and NATO-aligned nations, as electronic jamming operations along the front lines continue to complicate the guidance systems of long-range drones.
