UN Chief Denounces Fatal Attack on UN Peacekeeper in Lebanon
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a forceful condemnation Monday following the killing of an Indonesian peacekeeper serving with the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), as hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah claimed yet another international casualty late Sunday.
"This is just one of a number of recent incidents that have jeopardized the safety & security of peacekeepers," Guterres said on the US social media company X's platform.
The Secretary-General further urged all parties engaged in the conflict to honor their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and property.
UNIFIL had earlier confirmed the loss in a formal statement, disclosing that a peacekeeper was "tragically" killed Sunday when a projectile exploded at a UNIFIL position near the southern Lebanese village of Adchit al-Qusayr. A second peacekeeper sustained critical injuries in the same incident.
The force stated it has yet to determine the origin of the projectile. "We have launched an investigation to determine all of the circumstances," it said.
The peacekeeper's death comes as Israel has subjected Lebanon to sustained airstrikes and an active ground offensive in the country's south — a campaign launched following a cross-border attack carried out by Hezbollah on March 2.
The violence in Lebanon is unfolding against an already combustible regional backdrop. The US and Israel launched a joint air offensive against Iran on Feb. 28, a campaign that has killed more than 1,340 people to date, including then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Tehran has since retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf nations hosting US military assets — inflicting casualties, damaging infrastructure, and disrupting global markets and aviation across the region.
The killing of a UN peacekeeper adds a deeply alarming dimension to the crisis, threatening to draw international institutions further into a conflict whose geographic and humanitarian scope continues to expand.
