AfD Leader Urges for Withdrawal of US Troops from Germany
(MENAFN) Tino Chrupalla, chairman of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, criticized the ongoing presence of US forces in the country, local media reported on Monday.
"Let's start putting this into practice—by withdrawing US troops from Germany," Chrupalla said during a speech at the party’s conference in Saxony, as cited by reports.
The AfD party platform calls for "the withdrawal of all allied troops still stationed on German soil, and in particular their nuclear weapons."
Chrupalla urged a shift in Germany’s foreign policy, pointing to Spain as an example. Under a socialist-led government, Madrid has opposed the US-Israel offensive against Iran and barred Washington from using its military bases for the campaign.
Currently, around 38,000 US troops are stationed in Germany, mainly in Rhineland-Palatinate—home to the strategically significant Ramstein Air Base—as well as in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg.
Reports indicate that US President Donald Trump is considering a partial withdrawal of American forces from Germany, a measure his administration has contemplated since taking office. Sources familiar with the discussions said, "the frustration we've had with the Europeans has been very real," adding that "any country that's not paying five percent shouldn't be allowed to vote on future expenditures at NATO," according to reports.
