Trump Says Iran Dispatching 20 Oil Tankers to U.S. Through Hormuz

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Iran is dispatching 20 oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz beginning Monday, framing the move as a gesture of goodwill amid ongoing nuclear negotiations between the two nations.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One as he headed back to Washington, DC, Trump described the shipment as an unexpected sign of deference from Tehran.

"And now, today, they gave us, as a tribute — I don't know, I can't define it exactly, but they gave us, I think out of a sign of respect, 20 boats of oil — big, big boats of oil — going through the Hormuz Strait, and that's taking place starting tomorrow morning," he told reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Washington, DC.

The US president struck a cautiously optimistic tone regarding the broader diplomatic effort, though he stopped short of declaring a breakthrough.

"I would only say that we're doing extremely well in that negotiation," Trump said.

He expressed confidence that an agreement remains within reach, while acknowledging uncertainty. He added that he is "pretty sure" the US will make a deal with Iran, "but it's possible we won't."

"I do see a deal in Iran," he said, adding it "could be soon."

Trump further revealed that back-channel and face-to-face efforts are running simultaneously, noting the US is negotiating with Iran both "directly and indirectly."

On the question of potential military action, Trump did not rule anything out when asked whether he is still considering putting boots on the ground, saying the US has "lots of alternatives."

Signaling momentum at the negotiating table, Trump pointed to the pace of progress as evidence of a transformed counterpart.

"We're ahead of schedule with Iran. We're weeks ahead of schedule...and we have a group, it's really a new regime. It's a new group of people — people that we've never dealt with before, that are acting very reasonable," he said.

The remarks come days after Iran flatly rejected a US-proposed 15-point framework last Wednesday, with Tehran insisting any ceasefire arrangement would proceed solely on its own terms and timeline. Yet Trump suggested Iran has since signaled broad acceptance of the proposal.

When asked whether Iran had responded to his proposed 15-point plan, he said: "Yeah...They gave us most of the points — why wouldn't they?"

"Just to prove that they're serious, they gave us all of these boats," he added.
