Zelenskyy Visits Jordan for Talks with King Abdullah II
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to the Jordanian capital Amman on Sunday for talks with King Abdullah II, centering on prospective security cooperation and the rapidly deteriorating situation across the Middle East.
The meeting signals Kyiv's growing ambition to position itself as a key defense partner for regional nations increasingly threatened by Iranian drone and missile campaigns, as the US/Israel-Iran conflict continues to reshape the geopolitical landscape.
Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine stands ready to collaborate with regional partners on building integrated air defense capabilities, drawing directly from its battlefield experience against Russian aerial assaults.
"From our own experience, we know that without a unified system, it is simply impossible to establish comprehensive protection of people and critical infrastructure," he said on the US social media platform X.
"We have such a system, because for the fifth year of Russia's full-scale war, we have been forced to defend ourselves against constant Russian strikes, including those carried out using Iranian drones," he added.
Zelenskyy stressed, however, that any partnership must be mutually beneficial — emphasizing that nations receiving Ukrainian expertise should in turn contribute to strengthening Ukraine's own defense posture.
The Amman stop comes amid surging regional demand for Ukrainian drone-countermeasure knowhow. Zelenskyy disclosed that since Israel and the US launched a military offensive against Iran on Feb. 28 — an operation that has so far claimed more than 1,340 lives, including then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei — numerous Middle Eastern countries have reached out to Kyiv for assistance in neutralizing Iranian drone threats.
Iran has since retaliated with waves of drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations, inflicting casualties, damaging critical infrastructure, and sending shockwaves through global aviation and financial markets.
The Amman visit caps an intensive regional diplomatic tour. Zelenskyy previously traveled to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. In Doha, Ukraine formalized a long-term defense agreement, while in Abu Dhabi, Zelenskyy held defense cooperation discussions with President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. His stop in Jeddah saw both Ukraine and Saudi Arabia sign a separate defense cooperation accord on Friday following talks with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
