German Legal Experts Say US-Israel War on Iran Violates International Law

(MENAFN) Legal experts advising the German parliament have concluded that the ongoing military campaign by the United States and Israel against Iran appears to violate international law, warning of potential legal ramifications for Germany, according to media reports.

The study, commissioned by the opposition party The Left, found that the attacks “according to prevailing opinion,” contravene the UN Charter’s prohibition on the use of force, as they are neither justified by self-defense nor authorized by the UN Security Council.

In their 12-page report, the experts examined whether the use of US military bases on German soil—including Ramstein Air Base—for operations against Iran could constitute assistance for which Germany might bear legal responsibility. They noted that such a scenario “cannot be ruled out, depending on the specific circumstances.”

The report highlighted that possible violations could occur through the “indirect use of force,” since US bases are located in Germany rather than on sovereign American territory. The analysis drew parallels with a previous parliamentary study on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which determined that merely allowing Belarusian territory to be used for Russian offensive operations could amount to aiding and abetting.
