EU Leaders Condemn Israel After Latin Patriarch Barred from Holy Sepulchre

(MENAFN) Several European officials have voiced concern and condemnation after Israeli police barred the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate Palm Sunday Mass.

A statement from Giorgia Meloni said that preventing Pizzaballa from entering the church "constitutes an offense not only to believers, but to every community that recognizes religious freedom." Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the action "unacceptable" and instructed the Foreign Office "to summon the Israeli ambassador tomorrow to seek clarification regarding the decision."

Emmanuel Macron wrote on X that he “condemns this decision by the Israeli police, which adds to the worrying increase in violations of the status of Jerusalem’s Holy Sites.” He urged that the “free exercise of worship” be guaranteed for all religions.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also condemned the move, writing on X: "From the Government of Spain, we condemn this unjustified attack on religious freedom and demand that Israel respect the diversity of beliefs and international law. Because without tolerance, coexistence is impossible."

Portugal’s Foreign Ministry stated that the Israeli authorities’ decision "deserves deep condemnation," calling on them “to guarantee and uphold freedom of religion and worship."

Polish President Karol Nawrocki also expressed strong objection on X and voiced support for Cardinal Pizzaballa.
