Trump Says Iran to Send Twenty Oil Tankers to US via Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that Iran is set to dispatch 20 oil tankers to the United States via the Strait of Hormuz beginning Monday morning, describing the move as a form of goodwill.
Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One while traveling to Washington, he remarked, "And now, today, they gave us, as a tribute — I don't know, I can't define it exactly, but they gave us, I think out of a sign of respect, 20 boats of oil — big, big boats of oil — going through the Hormuz Strait, and that's taking place starting tomorrow morning."
He expressed confidence about the progress of discussions, saying, "I would only say that we're doing extremely well in that negotiation." He also noted that while an agreement appears likely, it is not guaranteed, stating he is "pretty sure” the US will make a deal with Iran, “but it's possible we won't." Emphasizing optimism, he added, "I do see a deal in Iran," and suggested that it "could be soon."
According to his remarks, communication between the two sides is happening through both direct and indirect channels. When questioned about the possibility of deploying ground forces, he responded that the US has "lots of alternatives."
Trump further indicated that discussions are moving faster than expected, stating, "We're ahead of schedule with Iran. We're weeks ahead of schedule...and we have a group, it's really a new regime. It's a new group of people — people that we've never dealt with before, that are acting very reasonable."
As indicated by reports, Iran had previously turned down a US-proposed 15-point framework aimed at ending the conflict, asserting that any ceasefire would be determined according to Tehran’s own conditions and timing.
When asked if Iran had reacted to the proposed plan, Trump said: "Yeah...They gave us most of the points — why wouldn't they?" He also linked the reported oil shipment to Iran’s intentions, adding, "Just to prove that they're serious, they gave us all of these boats."
