Deadly Collision Claims Fifteen Lives in Central Kenya

(MENAFN) At least 15 people lost their lives Saturday evening in Nyeri County, central Kenya, after a truck transporting logs collided head-on with a minibus, commonly referred to as a matatu, according to local reports.

Officials said that 10 individuals died at the scene, while five others succumbed to injuries after being rushed to the hospital. The Central Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer, Elizabeth Vivi, explained that the truck swerved to avoid cyclists, which resulted in the devastating collision with the 14-seater minibus, leaving significant casualties and damage.

President William Ruto expressed his condolences to the families affected, stating, "The national government, in conjunction with the county government of Nyeri, is engaging with the affected families and will provide all necessary support during this difficult time."

The National Transport and Safety Authority described the accident as a tragic event. Preliminary investigations indicate that factors such as reckless driving, excessive speed, and a possibly unroadworthy truck may have contributed to the crash.
