African Union Applauds UN Resolution on Transatlantic Slave Trade
(MENAFN) African Union (AU) Commission Chair Mahmoud Ali Youssouf on Thursday praised a UN resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade and the enslavement of Africans as among the gravest crimes against humanity, calling it “an important step toward truth, justice, and healing.”
Youssouf highlighted that the resolution, spearheaded by Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama, the AU’s champion on reparations, “reinforces the urgent need to address the enduring legacy of slavery.”
He also commended Mahama’s “important leadership,” noting that it reflects Africa’s persistent and principled demand for full acknowledgment of the slave trade and its lasting impact.
Youssouf reaffirmed the AU’s call for comprehensive recognition of both the historical and contemporary consequences of slavery, including initiatives aimed at reparative justice.
As stated by reports, the resolution passed with overwhelming support on Wednesday, garnering 123 votes in favor and three against—from the US, Israel, and Argentina. Fifty-two countries, including EU members, the UK, Canada, and Japan, abstained, while African nations and other Global South countries strongly backed the measure.
