Uganda Backs Israel if Mideast Conflict Threatens Its Existence
(MENAFN) Uganda’s military chief stated on Wednesday that while the country hopes for an end to the Middle East conflict, it would intervene on Israel’s side if the nation were at risk of defeat.
“We want the war in the Middle East to end now. The world is tired of it. But any talk of destroying or defeating Israel will bring us into the war — on the side of Israel,” said Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s chief of defense forces and son of President Yoweri Museveni, on X.
His statement comes as regional tensions rise following recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran and subsequent retaliatory attacks.
Kainerugaba has also recently attracted attention for plans to erect a statue honoring Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu, the brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was killed while leading Israeli commandos during the 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue in Uganda.
The conflict has escalated significantly since late February, with reports of large-scale casualties and continued exchanges of drone and missile strikes between Israel and Iran, affecting neighboring countries as well.
