S. Africa Aims to Expand Infrastructure Collaboration with China
(MENAFN) South Africa’s Deputy President Paul Mashatile stated on Thursday that the country aims to deepen its infrastructure partnership with China, focusing on modernizing ports as well as rail and road networks.
Mashatile emphasized that developing infrastructure is crucial for boosting economic growth and enhancing regional integration.
“We are encouraged by the growing collaboration in energy planning, gas-to-power and nuclear-to-power development, as well as the shared commitment to deepen cooperation in mineral processing, beneficiation and value addition,” he said during a meeting with visiting Chinese Vice President Han Zheng at the 9th South Africa-China Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town.
He highlighted that over the past three decades, bilateral relations have expanded in scope, depth, and strategic importance, contributing significantly to economic development and reflecting a mutual goal of accelerating progress in both nations.
The two countries are cooperating across multiple sectors, including science and technology, education, culture, the environment, and infrastructure.
“South Africa welcomes the growing cooperation (with China) in artificial intelligence, innovation and digital technologies, which will support technology localization, skills development and the advancement of sustainable economic growth,” Mashatile added.
He also praised China’s focus on technical and vocational education, noting that it equips young South Africans with critical skills, particularly in emerging fields such as new energy vehicle technologies.
