Heavy Floods in Malawi Kill Thirty-Four People

(MENAFN) At least 34 people have lost their lives, and close to 200 others have been injured following severe rains and flooding across Malawi last week, according to the country’s disaster management agency.

As stated by reports, flooding has affected 23 administrative areas, impacting more than 69,000 households—or roughly 310,000 people. Over 6,000 households have sought refuge in 84 emergency shelters, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) said.

The southern district of Chikwawa was hit hardest, with nearly 25,000 households affected, more than 1,800 people displaced into 24 emergency shelters, and nine deaths reported.

DoDMA warned that the death toll could increase as authorities continue to assess regions that remain largely inaccessible.

The department is coordinating with humanitarian partners to provide relief to affected communities and has allocated $10 million (17 billion Malawian Kwacha) to meet urgent needs, restore basic services, prevent secondary impacts, and initiate early recovery efforts.
