Iraqi Premier Denounces Attack on Kurdish Leader’s Residence

(MENAFN) Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani condemned an attack on the residence of Nechirvan Barzani, president of Iraq’s Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), as reported on Saturday.

The denunciation occurred during a phone conversation between Sudani and Barzani, in which the two discussed regional developments, security concerns, and measures to maintain stability, according to reports.

Sudani directed the creation of a joint security and technical team, composed of personnel from federal and KRG security agencies, to investigate the incident, identify those responsible, and take all necessary legal action, as stated in reports.

He emphasized Baghdad’s commitment “to prevent any outlaw, regional, or international party from dragging Iraq into the ongoing regional conflict, while making all integrated efforts to safeguard Iraq’s sovereignty and stability.”

The residence in Duhok had been targeted in a drone strike, though no casualties were reported, and damage was minimal near the intercepted areas, according to reports.

This incident comes amid rising regional tensions following a joint US-Israel offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, which has reportedly resulted in over 1,340 deaths, including that of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Tehran has launched successive drone and missile attacks on Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US forces, causing casualties, damaging infrastructure, and disrupting international markets and air travel.
