US Prepares Limited Ground Operations in Iran
(MENAFN) The US Department of War is reportedly preparing for several weeks of potential ground raids in Iran, despite President Donald Trump’s repeated statements that Tehran has already lost the month-long conflict and is seeking a deal to surrender.
Officials say any mission would fall short of a full-scale invasion, instead involving targeted operations by Special Operations forces and conventional infantry. Potential objectives could include securing Kharg Island, a major Iranian oil export hub, or conducting coastal raids near the Strait of Hormuz to neutralize weapons capable of threatening commercial and military shipping.
Trump has not yet authorized any of these plans. A White House spokesperson emphasized that the Pentagon’s preparations are intended to provide the president with “maximum optionality.”
The US has also increased its military presence in the region, with additional ships and personnel deployed. This includes reinforcements of approximately 3,500 sailors and Marines, along with transport and strike aircraft and amphibious assault capabilities. Another amphibious ready group is also reportedly en route, bolstering the US’s operational flexibility in the Middle East.
