Alison Baker qualified as a Primary school teacher 24 years ago. After a teaching career in primary, early years and special needs in Yorkshire and London, then became a lecturer in initial teacher education, where she was subject leader for English. She is now senior lecturer in Early Childhood Studies at University of East London.
She is writing up a PhD on White Working-Class Children in Children's Fantasy Fiction, focusing on Harry Potter, Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials and Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy. She has published on girls' horror comics, reading experiences of white working-class teachers and social class in Harry Potter.
