Trump Declines Netanyahu’s Proposal to Promote Uprising in Iran
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump reportedly dismissed a proposal from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly call for an uprising in Iran, according to reports.
Netanyahu had suggested encouraging Iranian citizens to take to the streets during a recent discussion, but Trump opposed the idea, warning that demonstrators could be “mowed down,” as stated by sources familiar with the conversation.
Israeli officials reportedly believed that recent strikes targeting high-ranking Iranian figures, including security personnel, might destabilize the regime and create an environment for internal unrest. However, few Iranians participated in protests during the annual festival of fire.
While Netanyahu remains doubtful about achieving a deal with Iran, Trump is described as "still interested in pursuing a diplomatic path that would leave what's left of the regime in place," according to reports.
Since Feb. 28, the US and Israel have conducted airstrikes on Iranian territory, resulting in over 1,340 fatalities.
