Macron Urges Iran to Return to Negotiating Table
(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron disclosed Tuesday that he spoke by phone with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, pressing Tehran to stand down from its regional offensive and pursue a diplomatic path forward.
In a post shared on X, Macron demanded that Iran halt the "unacceptable attacks against countries in the region," safeguard energy and civilian infrastructure, and restore freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz — a critical global oil chokepoint.
The French leader further called on Iran "to engage in good-faith negotiations" to achieve de-escalation and meet the "expectations of the international community" on Iranian issues, including the nuclear program.
In a separate call the same day, Macron reached out to Israeli President Isaac Herzog, reaffirming Paris's commitment to protecting non-combatants amid the widening conflict. According to his X post, Macron emphasized "the absolute necessity for the parties to the conflict to commit to preserving civilian and energy infrastructure ... and to embark on a path toward a sincere resumption of dialogue."
Macron also conveyed to his Israeli counterpart a guarantee of "France's full solidarity with the Israeli people in the face of daily attacks by Iran and Hezbollah."
The diplomatic outreach comes as conflicting signals cloud the prospect of a broader U.S.-Iran resolution. President Donald Trump asserted Tuesday that negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain active, a claim the Iranian side has flatly rejected — with officials in Tehran denying the existence of any direct or indirect talks between the two governments.
