Iran Appoints Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as New Security Chief
(MENAFN) Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new secretary of its Supreme National Security Council, replacing Ali Larijani, who was killed in a joint Israeli-US attack, the presidential office announced Tuesday.
Zolghadr, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), most recently served as secretary of the Expediency Discernment Council. His career also includes senior roles such as deputy interior minister and assistant to the judiciary chief for strategic affairs.
He takes over from Larijani, who died following a US-Israeli airstrike in Tehran on March 17.
The United States and Israel have continued a sustained aerial campaign against Iran since Feb. 28, with reported fatalities exceeding 1,340 people, including Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Tehran has launched retaliatory drone and missile attacks against Israel as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations. The strikes have resulted in casualties, infrastructure damage, and significant disruption to global markets and aviation.
