Iranian Missile Strike Kills Six Peshmerga, Injures Dozens in Erbil
(MENAFN) Six Peshmerga fighters were killed and 30 others injured after an Iranian ballistic missile attack targeted military positions in Erbil, northern Iraq, the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs reported on Tuesday.
“This morning, the headquarters of the 1st Region’s 7th Infantry Division and the 5th Infantry Division of the Peshmerga forces in Erbil’s Soran district were targeted by six Iranian ballistic missiles,” the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry described the attack as a “violation of the principles of good neighborliness” and “a hostile and treacherous act.”
“We did not expect such a cowardly response to the Kurdish region’s peaceful stance. However, betrayal and oppression are short-lived, and the will for peace will prevail,” it added.
The statement also called on all parties to avoid further conflict in the Kurdish region, urging the federal government, the international community, and allies to act against such “reckless aggression.”
The missile strike comes amid continuing regional escalation following a US and Israeli joint offensive on Iran since Feb. 28, which has reportedly killed over 1,340 people, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Tehran has responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Iraq, Jordan, and Gulf nations hosting US military forces, resulting in casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
