Philippines Considers Grounding Flights Amid Middle East Conflict
(MENAFN) The Philippines is facing potential disruptions to its aviation sector as fuel shortages continue due to escalating conflicts in the Middle East. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. stated that grounding aircraft is “a distinct possibility” amid ongoing tensions between the US and Israel and Iran, which have impacted energy supplies in the region.
“Several countries have already told our airlines they cannot fuel their aircraft, so they have to carry fuel there and back,” Marcos told reporters on Tuesday. “The long haul is going to be a much more serious problem.”
Addressing the possibility of grounding Filipino planes, Marcos added, “We're hoping not, but it’s a distinct possibility.”
The conflict in the region intensified after US and Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28, prompting Tehran to respond with repeated drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf nations hosting US military forces. In addition, Iran has gained control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil transport that supplies much of Asia’s energy needs.
