Iraq Condemns Drone Attack on US Embassy
(MENAFN) Iraq announced on Tuesday that the targeting of the US Embassy in Baghdad amounts to a “terrorist assault” against the nation’s sovereignty, denouncing the incident as a criminal offense.
In an official release shared on the social media platform X by the media office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, authorities indicated that banned factions had aimed their attack at the embassy headquarters in the capital city.
Al-Sudani, who serves as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, instructed security bodies and relevant institutions to track down those responsible and ensure they face legal consequences.
The statement cautioned that assaults on diplomatic facilities constitute a grave breach of international treaties and diplomatic norms, potentially placing Iraq in a challenging situation before the global community.
Earlier on Tuesday, a blaze erupted close to the US Embassy compound in Baghdad after it was struck by three drones carrying explosives, as reported by a correspondent present at the scene.
The embassy’s air defense system successfully intercepted and eliminated two of the drones, while the third hit a perimeter wall of the compound, igniting a fire in the nearby vicinity.
