Sanders Slams Cost of US Strikes on Iran, Calls for Domestic Spending
(MENAFN) US Senator Bernie Sanders has voiced strong criticism over the financial burden of Washington’s ongoing military operations targeting Iran, arguing that the money could be better spent on domestic needs, according to reports.
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Sanders highlighted the scale of the expenditure, noting that the conflict has already required $22.8 billion in funding.
“For $22.8 billion, we could provide Medicaid to 6.8 million kids, build 2.6 million public housing units, fund Head Start for 1.3 million, hire 240,000 teachers, and cancel $20,000 in student debt for 1 million borrowers,” he said.
He stressed the importance of directing government resources toward public services rather than military campaigns, especially as tensions in the region continue to rise, as stated by reports.
According to reports, joint military operations by the United States and Israel against Iran have been ongoing since late February, resulting in approximately 1,300 deaths, including that of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with numerous high-ranking political and military officials.
Reports further indicate that Iran has responded with a series of drone and missile attacks aimed at Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf states that host US military bases. These retaliatory strikes have led to casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and air travel.
