Abbas Talks with Pope on Palestinian Situation, Regional Tensions
(MENAFN) Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with Pope Leo XIV on Monday to address recent developments in the Middle East and the conditions faced by the Palestinian people, according to reports.
The Vatican said that Abbas called to raise concerns over escalating regional conflicts and the humanitarian situation of Palestinians. The pope reaffirmed the Vatican’s "commitment to achieving peace through political and diplomatic dialogue, as well as through full respect for international law," as stated in the report.
A ceasefire in Gaza, effective from October 10, 2025, followed a war with Israel that left over 72,000 Palestinians dead, more than 171,000 injured, and destroyed roughly 90% of civilian infrastructure in the enclave. The UN has estimated reconstruction costs at approximately $70 billion.
Violence has also surged in the occupied West Bank since February 28, when US and Israeli forces launched a joint operation against Iran. During the first two weeks of the conflict, Israeli settlers reportedly carried out 192 attacks, resulting in the deaths of six Palestinians, according to reports.
