Pope To Visit Algeria In April
Leo XIV will arrive in Algiers on April 13. In the city, he will deliver a greeting at the Martyrs' Memorial of Maqam Echahid, inaugurated in 1982 on the 20th anniversary of Algeria's independence. He will then be received by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and give a speech. That day, he will also visit one of the largest mosques in the world, the Great Mosque of Algiers. He will then have two more engagements: a meeting at the Center for Welcome and Friendship of the Augustinian Missionary Sisters in the nearby city of Bab el Oued, and a speech at the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa in Algiers.
On April 14, Leo XIV will travel to the city of Annaba, where he will visit the archaeological site of Hippo and the home of the Little Sisters of the Poor. He will also meet with members of the Augustinian Order before celebrating a mass at the Basilica of St. Augustine. Leo XIV is an Augustinian.
Leo XIV's schedule will continue in the following days with visits to Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea before returning to the Vatican. The pope was elected by the College of Cardinals in May 2025, following the death of Pope Francis in April. On his first trip as pope, he visited Lebanon in November last year, on a tour that also included Turkey. Before traveling to Africa, he will make a trip to Europe, to Monaco, at the end of March.
