Trump Calls on Nations to Join Coalition for Strait of Hormuz Security

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump says he has "demanded" that roughly seven countries heavily dependent on Middle East oil join a coalition to escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway handling about 20 percent of global oil shipments, as stated by reports.

"I'm demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory, because it is their own territory," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, referring to the strait.

He did not specify which nations the U.S. is negotiating with. In a separate interview, Trump told a British news outlet that NATO members should dispatch warships to help reopen the strait or face a "very bad" future. "If there's no response or if it's a negative response, I think it will be very bad for the future of NATO," he said.

Earlier reports indicate that the White House may announce a multinational coalition as early as this week, aimed at securing the oil shipping route. Trump also claimed in a social media post that many countries affected by Iran’s attempt to close the strait will be sending warships to protect the corridor.

Many governments, however, have publicly been cautious about committing to such a mission while hostilities continue, given the risks involved.

In his first statement as Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei on Thursday called for the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz and vowed to open new fronts in Iran’s conflict with the United States and Israel.

The United States and Israel began large-scale military strikes on Iran on February 28, disrupting global shipping, sending oil prices soaring, and affecting the international economy.
