Starmer Holds Talks with Trump on Urgent Need to Reopen Strait of Hormuz
(MENAFN) Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has spoken with US President Donald Trump about the urgent need to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and "end the disruption to global shipping," Downing Street confirmed.
The conversation follows Trump’s call for the UK and other nations to deploy warships to secure the crucial oil route, which has been largely closed since the US and Israel began military operations against Iran two weeks ago.
Energy Secretary Ed Miliband told a news agency that the UK is exploring "any options" to help reopen the strait, including coordinating with the US and other allies.
Iran’s partial blockade of the waterway has caused severe disruption to global supply chains and driven energy prices higher. Several vessels have reportedly been attacked while navigating the narrow passage, which typically handles around 20% of the world’s oil. There are also concerns that Iran may have deployed mines to impede shipping.
A statement attributed to Iran’s new Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei indicated that Tehran will continue to block the strait as a means of exerting political and economic pressure on the US.
A Downing Street spokeswoman said that during their discussion, Sir Keir and Trump "discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East and the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz to end the disruption to global shipping, which is driving up costs worldwide."
She added: "The prime minister also expressed his condolences for the American service personnel who have lost their lives during the conflict. They agreed to keep in touch."
The spokeswoman also noted that the prime minister held a separate call with Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, during which they concurred on the importance of lifting the blockade.
