European Lawmakers Criticize Von der Leyen Over Mideast Strikes

(MENAFN) The Left group in the European Parliament on Wednesday criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for failing to condemn recent US and Israeli strikes in the Middle East during her address to lawmakers.

The group said von der Leyen focused largely on economic topics, such as energy markets, the EU Emissions Trading System, and competitiveness, instead of addressing the civilian casualties in Tehran and Beirut.

Manon Aubry, co-chair of the Left group, called the US-Israeli campaign in Iran and Lebanon “completely illegal under international law” and questioned whether military force could establish democracy. She added, “If you love war so much, Ms. Von der Leyen, send your children to fight, but don't count on us. We say no to war and its profiteers.”

The group emphasized support for the Iranian people’s right to determine their own political future and urged diplomacy and respect for international law as the means to resolve the conflict.
